Avalanche Canada renewing calls for safety as more snow is expected

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With a lot of snow expected on local mountains this weekend and last week’s deadly slide near McBride, Avalanche Canada is asking you to be extra careful in the backcountry.

Avalanche Canada says it’s all about prevention.

Guide Manager Karl Klassen with Avalanche Canada says you need to make sure you have the training required to make a good plan before you leave.

“Getting the information before you leave about the conditions, having the experience to recognize the avalanche terrain, travelling only one at a time on avalanche slopes, making sure that large groups of people are not exposed to avalanches from above and being very, very careful in terrain that has terrain traps such as gully features.”

He says a lot of people are very proficient riders but that does not equate avalanche experience.

A week ago today, five snowmobilers died and several others were hurt after the avalanche near McBride.

Klassen says you also need to have a good plan before you leave and know the risks.
