Anti-demolition rally in Kerrisdale this afternoon

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of demonstrators rallied this afternoon in front of a soon-to-be demolished mansion that is only 20 years old.

A story in the Vancouver Sun last week described the $6 million mansion at 6088 Adera Street in Kerrisdale as “bulldozer bait.”

The home, built in 1996, underwent $350,000 in renovations just three years ago.

“It entailed all new hardwood floors, a new water filtration system,” according to rally organizer Beverley Watt.

She feels this highlights the problem of needless demolitions plaguing the city.

“I don’t think there’s any city around the world that allows rampant demolition and does not protect character and heritage,” Watt says. “I mean, granted, they’ve done First Shaughnessy, but that’s not good enough.”

Watt hopes to send a message to the city. “The citizens of Vancouver have had enough and there should be a moratorium, right away, to stop demolitions until they have something put into place that’s actually effective to stop the demolitions.”

She points out the city issued more than 1,100 demolition permits last year, the most in a decade.

Watt says these rampant demolitions do not belong in a place that is trying to bill itself as “The World’s Greenest City.”

“They’re doing great things regarding kitchen waste, domestic recycling, but this is a huge issue. Because of the demolitions, we’re losing the mature gardens, mature trees, and then, of course, all the debris from the demolitions.”

Vancouver City Councillor Adriane Carr was at today’s rally, and she’s worried about the housing crisis in the city. Listen to her concerns:
