Poll finds Canadian men more likely than women to watch the Oscars

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s always been assumed more women than men watch the Oscars but new research shows that might not be the case tonight.

Of the thousand Canadians asked, 54 per cent of men will be tuning in tonight, while only 48 per cent of women will watch.

NRG Research Consultant Lesley Duncan says things get really interesting when you look at men under the age of 35. “About 65 per cent, so about two thirds of the ones we talked to, are planning to watch the Oscars and only half of women in the same age category. So the perception that it is all young women following entertainment news isn’t necessarily the case for the Oscar audience.”

Duncan says notes more than half of the people they asked say they’ll tune in tonight. “BC is the biggest audience, so we are about 58 per cent. The lowest are Manitoba and the Atlantic Provinces and then Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the rest of the country. Pretty much half of them are going to watch, the rest of them aren’t or aren’t sure.”

As for whom we think will win, she says more than a third of Canadians are pulling for the Alberta made “The Revenant” to take Best Picture.

Last year, 6.4 million Canadians tuned in, down about 19 per cent from previous year.
