Deal on national climate change strategy not expected when PM meets with premiers in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The federal government is pushing ahead with a new national climate change strategy. But a deal is not expected when the prime minister meets with his provincial counterparts this week in Vancouver.

The government had already said we shouldn’t expect any climate deal from this meeting. Now, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says this process will take months, and the feds and provinces will be setting up working groups to try to reach an agreement.

“It’s going to involve experts. It’s going to involve input from Canadians. And in six months, we will be in a position to come back and actually announce what the plan would look like,” she explains.

“We need to make sure that what we’re doing is done in a thoughtful way. Because as we say, we want to do this so it grows our economy and leads us on a much more sustainable path.”

McKenna says it’s time for action and she wants to work with provinces towards a unified approach.

Many provinces are on board with the government’s plan, but Saskatchewan is opposed to introducing any type of price on carbon, something the feds are committed to.

That could add some tension when the prime minister and premiers sit down at the table this week.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be live on NEWS 1130 tomorrow around 8:15 a.m. Click here to listen live.
