Trudeau meets with premiers in Vancouver this week

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to sit down with the premiers this week for the first ministers meeting, right here in Vancouver.

One political expert says this will be a real test for our new PM.

Energy and the environment are expected to dominate the discussion. Hamish Telford with the University of the Fraser Valley says getting people to agree on a single topic might be difficult.

“He wants to get a national strategy on climate change and carbon pricing. Of course, we have a carbon tax here in British Columbia — a fairly robust one,” he tells us.

That is not the case across the country.

“How you coordinate all of these very different positions and strategies into one coherent whole is not clear to me,” says Telford.

He also believes there will be some relations between the premiers to watch for.

“And we’ve seen the government of BC — in its throne speech and, to a certain extent, in its budget — taking swipes at Alberta. So, that could be a frosty relationship there.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will join NEWS 1130 live in studio tomorrow morning at about 8:15 a.m. Click here to listen live.
