Unclear if TransLink can close its fare gates by April 8th

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – One day after TransLink announced it had found an acceptable way for disabled people to use the Compass Card system, the province seems to be saying “not so fast.”

The minister responsible for TransLink won’t say if the fare gates can close as planned by April 8th.

Yesterday TransLink announced people without the use of their arms would have to call for help beforehand to have an attendant do the tapping for them. A disability group we spoke with seemed satisfied and TransLink said it would pursue other options in the future.

We asked the minister responsible for TransLink, Peter Fassbender, several times if the gates will be closing April 8th with the solution announced by TransLink yesterday in place.

“Here’s the bottom line. Whatever the solution is, it has to be acceptable to persons with disabilities so they have access. That’s the expectation. Whether it is a single solution, or there may be a multiple of solutions depending on the individual needs of those persons. Our expectation is that every person will have access or there will be a gate that will have to be left open until that is resolved.”

We have reached out to TransLink for clarification, but have had no response.
