Chafer beetle causing problems for local sports teams

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some local sports teams might have a harder time finding playing space this year, as chafer beetles have wreaked havoc on Vancouver’s parks.

Vancouver Park Board Manager of Park Operations Brian Quinn says that soccer and baseball fields at Bobolink and Musqueam parks are being closed.

“It will affect about six of seven user groups. We are currently trying to find other facilities for them to use at this time.”

The fields are being treated with nematodes, which Quinn says are non-toxic, and could take between six and 12 months to remedy.

“We have four fields that have been significantly damaged, we’re only going to be closing two at this time.
