Disability advocates satisfied with TransLink’s temporarily gate solution

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Those with disabilities are satisfied with the transit authority’s interim solution to help them move smoothly through compass card gates.

TransLink announced earlier this week it will have a staff member at each station to help people who can’t use their hands to tap in or out. The disability gate will be left open if a staff member isn’t available at that time.

Jane Dyson with the Disability Alliance of BC hopes the company will monitor the policy carefully to make sure there isn’t a situation where a gate is closed and no staff is around. “Having staff at the gates is something we have heard from our community, and is something that they like the idea of because sometimes they need assistance or need to ask questions.”

Dyson says they’ve received commitments from TransLink that it will work with them and other groups to develop a more permanent solution.
