Home inspections changing in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – New, stricter rules are coming in for the home inspection industry.

The province is making this move after consulting with consumer protection groups and the public.

If you’re getting a home inspected, the person doing that will need to give you details in advance about what that examination will include.

“If you want to reach a level of professional compliance, you want to make sure that they have errors and omissions insurance as an organization,” says Housing Minister Rich Coleman. “They’ll all have to be licensed under consumer protection. They’ll have to carry the appropriate insurance.”

Coleman says these changes are intended to protect those who hire someone to look at a property.

“We just felt that it’s important that we have a set of standards, a formulation of standards with regards to how a home inspection should be done, what should be covered by it, and the qualification by somebody that’s going to do that and be licensed in BC,” says Coleman.

Home inspectors didn’t need a license here until 2009 — even now, Alberta is the only other province with that requirement.

The new rules will come into force in September.
