How do you keep the kids busy during Spring Break?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It can be a challenging time for parents, trying to think of things to do for the kids while they’re off for Spring Break.

“All of a sudden you have long days to fill and you’re trying to avoid taking them out for too many expensive days out,” says Sasha Emmons, the editor of Today’s Parent Magazine.

It can be daunting if you can’t spend the money for a week or two’s worth of paid activities.

There are a number of low-cost, in-house options says Emmons.

And there’s one that everyone can relate to.

“Remember in gym class when you had stations and you had to do different exercises at the stations, while you may not think that was very fun, your kids will probably think it’s a total blast. So set up an activity course for them. One station is jumping jacks, one is duck-walking, one is crawling under the table, and another is jumping rope. Then have them cycle through the stations,” says Emmons.

Then have them cycle through those activities.

“Create a laser maze. You need a hallway for this one and you basically zigzag yarn across the hallway and they have to get through without touching any of the lasers, Mission Impossible Style,” says Emmons.

And once they’re tired out, she suggests a new twist on an old favourite.

“Take a piece of Bristol board, have them (kids) create a drawing on it and then sketch jigsaw pieces,” says Emmons.

From there, cut them out, and you’ve got a giant jigsaw puzzle.
