Vancouver traffic fatalities can be cut to zero: city councillor

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A Vancouver councillor thinks traffic fatalities can be cut to zero in the city by 2040. She has the support of Mayor Gregor Robertson to make it happen.

Councillor Heather Deal‘s proposal directs city staff to look at actionable steps that can be taken to enhance safety, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians.

Some of the suggestions include things like flashing crosswalk lights and adding corner bulges to sidewalks.

“In places where we have bike lanes that are paint and not actually physically separated, we are going to be moving toward separating more of them so there is a actually a barrier between cars that move much faster than cyclists. We are also looking at street light timing and whether people have enough time to cross streets,” says Deal.

“Lighting is really important,” she explains. “Street design is very important for keeping pedestrians separate from cyclist and separate from cars and making sure that transit buses have clear places to drive and have really good sight lines as they turn corners. We know that corners are a really dangerous place for everybody.”

If the motion passes tomorrow, short-term recommendations will be expected in June with longer-term policies available by November.
