Richmond picks 16 schools for its possible closure list

(VANCOUVER) NEWS 1130 — Rumours of school closures around the Lower Mainland are closer to reality in Richmond where the district narrowed their list of possibilities to 16 Elementary schools Monday.

The list includes: Blundell, Bridge, Diefenbaker, Dixon, Errington, Gilmore, Grauer, Lee, Maple Lane, McKay, McKinney, Mitchell, Quilchena, Thompson, Whiteside, and Woodward.

At the same time, in East Vancouver, parents still waiting for such a list attended a meeting with Vancouver School Board representatives on the topic of school closures and budget cuts.

Parents tell NEWS 1130 even after the meeting they’re still not sure what’s going on and it seems the politics between the board, and province is muddying the message.

The province has said schools need to be filled to 95 per cent capacity before regions will receive funding for seismic upgrades.

School boards are faced with the task of either closing or repurposing schools in order to bring up that enrollment number.
