Surrey mayor to make major safety announcement about recent gun violence

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner is making an announcement this afternoon about the recent spike in gun crime. She’ll be joined by Mounties and BC’s minister of public safety.

Doug Elford with Newton’s Community Association believes the city’s reputation is being negatively affected. “We are already up to 32 shootings and it is not even into the fourth month of the year so it really is damaging Surrey’s reputable as safe, livable city.

He says those who can move are at least thinking about it “I was talking to somebody last night and they are looking at going to Langley…..taking their families and getting out, so there is some discussion about that. A lot of it has to do with the fact that we are seeing repeaters of the violence in the city.

Elford notes there is no end to the violence in sight and renters he talks to are even more likely to leave the area.

Hepner is expected to speak at 2 p.m.
