Vandals leave 6,000 without power in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – BC Hydro says vandals caused an outage for 6,000 customers in Surrey overnight after a chainsaw was used to cut down four transmission poles in the Green Timbers area.

It doesn’t appear anything had been stolen, which rules out something like wire theft.

In addition to the transmission line carrying 60,000 volts, the poles carry two sets of high-voltage distribution circuits, each carrying 25,000 volts. BC Hydro say it’s concerning because it could have injured or killed someone, including crews who were called out for repairs.

More than a dozen individuals worked to fix the problem which involves replacing the damaged poles and transferring the conductors and circuits to new poles.

The RCMP has been called in to investigate.
