IIO looking into fatal crash involving Vancouver Island Mountie

SURREY – BC’s Independent Investigations Office has been called in to conduct an investigation into the crash that killed 32-year-old Constable Sarah Beckett in Langford on April 5.

The driver of a pickup truck was taken into custody, but released the next day without being charged.

The police watchdog says it’s investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision to determine if the actions or inactions of an officer may have contributed to the collision.

The IIO investigates any police-involved incident where there is a death or serious injury.

The latest investigation is one of three launched, including a criminal probe by Vancouver Island RCMP and the investigation into the crash by the Saanich Police Department.

Thousands attended funeral services on Tuesday for Beckett, an 11-year-veteran of the RCMP who leaves behind a husband and two sons, aged two and five.
