Vancouver pool to close over ‘health concerns’ during 4/20

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Fears of marijuana smoke drifting inside the Vancouver Aquatic Centre during next week’s 4/20 event is forcing the closure of the facility. The Park Board is making the move over, what it calls, health concerns for people living in the West End.

Sarah Kirby-Yung says the board is closing the pool because some people who use the facility have respiratory issues and pot smoke could cause them problems.

She explains there will be operations staff on Sunset Beach to make sure everyone is safe. “We’re going to have Park Rangers on the seawall starting from 7 a.m. to educate people and let them know what’s going on. Additionally, we’re going to need to have life guards down there because this event is happening near water and clearly we have to be aware of that potential risk.”

Tens of thousands of people attended last year’s protest outside the Vancouver Art Gallery. The annual event was initially meant to be a protest against pot prohibition and the Trudeau government says it’s working on legislation to make marijuana legal, but it’s still not clear when that will happen.
