Ex-gangster has a message for those behind gun violence on Surrey streets

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – As the premier announces more money to combat gangs in our province, there is a sense the gun violence on Surrey’s streets is far from over. An ex-gangster has a message for those behind it.

Jordan Buna says he remembers being entrenched in gang life.

“Think about where you want your life to be in five years,” he says to those in it now. “think about the choices that you’re making in your day-to-day.”

Buna — who now works with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit — says it’s never too late to start making better choices.

“It took me until I was about 24 to start realizing that I needed to start making some better choices. With a jail sentence or two under my belt, I’ve still managed to be able to transform my life into something positive. And there’s absolutely not a single thing in this world that would stop any one of these kids from doing it themselves.”

The provincial government has announced it’s putting $23 million over three years into cracking down on gangs.

There have been more than 30 reports of shots being fired in Surrey since the start of 2016.

The latest happened last night. Just before 10:30 p.m., officers found evidence of a shooting at 160th and 93rd Avenue.

Witnesses say a light-coloured SUV took off right after it happened, but there are no suspects right now. No one was hurt.
