North Van City Council gives go-ahead to study on possible new museum location

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It looks like North Vancouver may be getting a new museum after all.

Last night, city council gave the green light to a feasibility study of locating the facility in a proposed development just north of Lonsdale Quay.

Sanford Osler with the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Commission is excited by the news.

“We started to look at other opportunities and this was probably the best one, in terms of the size and the location and the characteristics.”

In January, the city rejected a plan for the museum to be moved into the old Pipe Shop building on the former Wallace Shipyards site.

Osler says the new proposed location is an even better spot. “This one certainly meets the bill. In fact, arguably, it’s more central, from a transit perspective.”

A public hearing and final decision by North Vancouver City Council is expected before this summer. Construction could begin early next year with the museum opening in late 2018 or early 2019.
