VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new poll in Vancouver is placing the blame for the Vancouver School Board budget shortfall on one group in particular.
Nearly two-thirds of those polled blame Christy Clark and the Liberals for the penny pinching and the consequences of those cuts.
The polls indicates 64 per cent Vancouverites are opposed to school closures and cuts to educational programs
Rory Brown is the Vancouver Secondary Teachers’ Association president. He says the clear majority is sending a message.
“Vancouverites don’t believe the narrative that the problem of the under-funding rests with the Vancouver School Board. It’s not the Vancouver School Board’s problem it’s a provincial problem and the provincial government is short-selling the students in Vancouver.”
According to the poll, 73 per cent of Vancouverites are opposed to asking parents to pay more fees or fundraise to make up the funding gaps for core educational services.
“This budget has nothing to do with education. It’s a shell game that the provincial government is playing with education funding and students in Vancouver are the ones who are going to suffer. I mean this is a brutal budget season.”
Insights West put together the numbers and was commissioned by the local unions that represent Vancouver school workers.
