Hundreds of guns turned over to Surrey RCMP

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In an effort to clean-up the streets of Surrey, police are touting the success of their latest ‘Safe City’ project.
Over the course of just a couple of weeks last month, Mounties along with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC received 500 firearms and 3,000 rounds of ammunition.
RCMP Sergeant Alanna Dunlop says in most cases, the guns belonged to people whose license had expired. “You can picture the typical person, or the majority of the people who we were maybe of a different time — a different generation — who had a firearm inherited in their family and had it in the basement or something like that.”
She adds there is no indication any of the people who turned their guns over are linked to the ongoing violence south of the Fraser. “There are no consequences for this other than we’re facilitating proper registration for these people. We will look after them as far as destruction goes.”
She adds some of the guns they received were very old, others weren’t stored properly.
There have been over 30 shootings or shots fired calls in Surrey so far this year.
