Ten animals killed in Burnaby fire

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Fire investigators returned to the scene of a blaze this morning after ten animals died of smoke inhalation at a home in Burnaby.

The fire happened on Fulwell Street near Westminster Avenue at a home used by an animal trainer.

Assistant Fire Chief Erik Vogel says eight dogs and two cats died.

“One dog appeared to be fine, and it was taken away by the vet. She had called the vet before we arrived, and the vet came and assisted with some resuscitation attempts.”

He says crews tried to CPR on the animals using pet oxygen masks.

“Bit of a surreal situation with animals being laid out everywhere, and the crews immediately went into rescue mode and started doing CPR on them. We have actual pet oxygen masks. We didn’t have enough of those, so we (also) used the ones on the trucks.”

The cause is believed to be electrical at this point.
