Pace car stickers tell other drivers you don’t plan to exceed speed limit

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s not unlike a “Baby On Board” sticker and can also be referred to as a “mobile speed bump.”

The Pace Car program is only about a year old but the new approach to slowing down speeding drivers is catching on across Canada.

Drivers put a bright yellow sticker on the back of their vehicle, letting others know they don’t plan on going faster than the speed limit in a residential area. It’s meant to make streets in those neighbourhoods a little safer.

“I think sometimes people just need that reminder. We’re so wrapped up with everything we do every day that sometimes we just need to slow down. And I think that this is a really neat idea,” says Abbotsford Police Sergeant Judy Bird.

She adds even impatient drivers should get the message.

“People who are in a rush or get frustrated with drivers, if they see this yellow sign, maybe it will remind them that it’s still a school zone time or it’s still within the dawn-to-dusk time frame and that they need to slow down.”

She isn’t worried other drivers will try to get around the pace cars out of frustration.

“With something like this being posted on a sign or on a car, a person may initially be angry. But if they take a second to read it — which most people do, even in their anger — they may actually realize this is a school zone [or] this is a playground, there are children, this is supported by a neighbourhood and just slow down.”

The program is nationwide and always looking for new members.
