Harsher fines not detering distracted drivers

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Heftier fines haven’t stopped some drivers from using their cell-phones while behind the wheel.

Abbotsford Police Constable Ian MacDonald says some people are still confused as to what constitutes distracted driving.

Drinking a coffee, for instance, won’t necessarily land you a ticket.

“Unless you’re holding your coffee maker, we’re looking more at cell phones and other distractions that are electronic in nature,” says MacDonald.

“Regrettably, people who were oblivious to distracted driving and the penalties and the repercussions, continue to be oblivious.”

Officers in Abbotsford issued more than a dozen tickets on the first day of the new rules, and will continue their enforcement blitz for another week or so.
