Local boxers honouring Muhammad Ali

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A local tribute to Muhammad Ali may be in the works by members of Vancouver’s boxing community.

Ras Nikhilesh Nath Nayar, a boxing fanatic and trainer with Contenders Boxing Studio, says many athletes are still learning of the Friday death of the 74-year-old.

Nayar has added 74 sets of 1 – 2’s, 74 push-ups, and other sets to training to pay homage to the boxing great and civil rights champion.

He says other gyms are also talking about doing something more.

“It would be good to get a couple of the clubs together and see if we can’t have some sort of meet and greet — a wonderful notion would be to have a tribute to for the greatest of all time.”

Nayar says there is a lasting motivation and nostalgia for local fighters from Ali’s fight at the Pacific Coliseum back in 1972.

He says the popularity of the sport has actually seen resurgence in the last few years as people recognise the long history attached to the fight style.
