Nurses and farmers top list of professions held in high regard

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two jobs carry a lot more respect than any others across the country. Nine out of ten Canadians respect farmers and nurses the most, meaning we respect those who feed and take care of us.

Pollster Mario Canseco with Insights West says the other top job was one they didn’t expect. “Farmers were a bit of surprise in the number two spot at 91 per cent…..quite interesting that the ones we respect the most are the ones who help us heal, the ones who feed us and the ones who take care of our pets”

Canseco notes one shocker was to see judges falling down the list. “This is a group that usually does very well. In other surveys that I have done in the past they are usually at around 75 or 80 per cent and they dropped to 65 per cent, which I suspect has a little to do with the Jian Ghomeshi case. A lot of people followed it and as we saw a lot of people were disappointed with the way things went.”

As far as who is not respected – look to politicians, car salespeople and, especially with the recent stories of shady dealings – realtors, with 43 per cent holding negative perceptions against them.

There are some differences along gender lines, with women expressing higher regard for lawyers and realtors than men, while young people hold actors in higher regard than those over 55.
