Gregor Robertson brushes off accusations of pipeline fear mongering from Calgary’s mayor

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s mayor has found himself in a war of words with his Calgary counterpart over pipelines.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is accusing Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson of fear mongering when it comes to the proposed Trans Mountain expansion, which would transport oil from Alberta to the coast through Metro Vancouver.

But Robertson insists Kinder Morgan’s project, which would triple capacity and significantly increase tanker traffic off the coast, brings very real risks, calling Nenshi’s comments “not helpful.”

“It’s important that all Canadians understand the risk to Vancouver and certainly the risk to climate, globally, with this expansion project.”

“It’s challenging when a huge transition must take place in Alberta. That’s being provoked by the plummetting oil prices, as well. We’re at a time when transition won’t be easy, but it’s necessary,” he adds.

Robertson is in Ottawa asking the Trudeau government to ditch the Trans Mountain expansion. The feds are expected to make a decision on the project by year’s end.
