Vigil for LGBTQ community happening at the Vancouver Art Gallery

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Alan Jernigan woke up in Kelowna to a phone call this morning and immediately jumped in his car.

Still learning the details of a mass shooting in Orlando, FL, the president of Pride Vancouver is one of many people cutting weekend events short to make it in time for and evening vigil in Vancouver.

“I think the best thing we can do for the community is give people opportunities to come together to celebrate the community and not to mourn, but I think today it’s just about giving everybody the chance to be together,” Jernigan says.

The vigil will be held at 8 p.m. in front of the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery along West Georgia Street.

The event is being organized by several local groups.

Jernigan say while you don’t need to prepare anything, you are welcome to bring candles and flags to represent the community. “The most important thing isn’t the time but that people come out to show support.”

Several people in the Vancouver area are putting their Pride flags early as a way to show solidarity.
