Finance minister, Vancouver mayor meeting to discuss idea of vacant home tax

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A proposal by Vancouver’s mayor to tax vacant homes could be closer to becoming a reality after today.

BC Finance Minister Mike de Jong and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson are sitting down and hash out the details for what a vacant home tax in the city could look like.

Last week, Robertson proposed a tax on homes that sit empty but critics say it could punish more homeowners than expected.

That tax is intended to encourage people to rent out the thousands of empty houses and condos.

Robertson has said he wants the province to help out, but he plans to move forward with or without the support. Today could determine just how much collaboration there will be.

The tax is meant to help cool down the city’s red-hot housing market, which has left many would-be buyers out of luck.

The meeting is happening later this afternoon in Downtown Vancouver.
