Youth found guilty of second-degree murder in death of local teen

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A teen has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the attack and death of 19-year-old Karim Meskine near the 22nd Street SkyTrain Station back in 2013.

Crown Counsel had been asking the accused, who was 16-years-old at the time of the killing, to be sentenced as an adult.

“This was an extremely tragic case that shocked the community on a number of levels,” says Staff Sergeant Jennifer Pound. “IHIT and New Westminster Police have worked in partnership with Crown Counsel to ensure justice was served on the responsible individual. This second degree murder conviction is confirmation that, despite one’s age, those who believe it is their right to callously take a life will be held responsible for their actions.”

We can’t name the accused because there is a publication ban in place. Sentencing isn’t expected until sometime later this year.

Meskine was hit in the head with a baseball bat while waiting at a bus stop near the SkyTrain Station. He spent the next few days in the hospital in a coma and was taken off life support shortly after.

The next court date for this case is scheduled for July 7th.
