DELTA, B.C. – The Burns Bog near Vancouver caught fire on Sunday and officials predict it could take a week to extinguish the blaze. Here is a look at some other fires in the largest raised peat bog on the west coast of North America:
May 2007 — A fire in the bog is brought under control in late May. At its peak, flames reached the tops of some trees, close to 15 metres high. One firefighter suffered burns to his hands battling the blaze.
September 2005 — Investigators say a fire in the bog that shrouded the Lower Mainland in smoke for days was caused by humans. The fire, which destroyed about two square kilometres of the 30-square-kilometre bog, took days to extinguish.
July 1996 — A 1.7-square-kilometre area is levelled by flames. A biologist says a fire won’t have long-term effects on the bog.
