Who will win the US election? British Columbians are placing their bets

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – British Columbians are betting big on the US election.

One factor seems to drive these novelty bets.

BC Lottery Corp says they’ve seen a huge surge in interest on the US election since they became the first Canadian jurisdiction to offer betting on politics in 2014.

Doug Cheng with BCLC says it’s now overtaken the Oscars as the most popular novelty bet.

“I think the unsual nature of this election, where you have a contentious candidate like Donald Trump. Around the time when all the bets started to pour in was a time where he started to gain a lot of momentum and became a very legitimate, viable candidate for the Republican nomination.”

While Hilary Clinton is still the favourite to win it, Donald Trump is climbing fast.

“His odds right now are slightly more than two to one, but a year ago his odds were sixty to one. And in January of 2015, when rumours began about his wanting to run for president, his odds were 100 to one. So within in a year and half’s time, he has really cut his odds down.”
