Seven arrested in Burnaby demoviction battle

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Seven people were arrested this morning in Burnaby at a low rent apartment building on Imperial Street taken over by protesters two weeks ago. Renters who live there and in the surrounding building are demanding affordable housing and are scared they’ll soon be out on the street.

Many say they’ve been here for years and simply have nowhere else to live and can’t afford to buy any of the condos that are being built at this site.

“I never, ever, ever thought that I would have to fight for my daughter’s safety and her home so she can just live a life and I completely support the demoviction.” says one mother speaking through tears.

Another woman who lives nearby says she’s sure within the next couple of years, she and her family will be out on the street.

“We are not homeless, we have jobs. We don’t have mental illnesses, we are normal people just like you. We have families, we have children, we have parents. This is a normal working class family and we are determined to stay here.”

No charges have been approved against those who were arrested and organizers say they’ll stay as long as they can. They claim they’ve reached out for meetings with the mayor and his council but haven’t been able to get anywhere.

In hopes of gaining the community’s support, a rally is being at 5025 Imperial Street this Saturday at 2:00 pm.
