One dead, two injured in serious Granville Island crash

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police say one person is dead, two others are injured after an SUV went into the Net Loft Building on Granville Island.

It appears the SUV went into the building, pinning a pedestrian under the vehicle. That victim has since died.

Investigators aren’t identifying the victim, only saying she was a 23-year-old foreign national studying in Canada. They are in the process of notifying her family.

There were two other people hurt, but police not sure if they were with the victim. The area “was busy” at the time.

It’s unclear was caused the crash and it’s too early to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

The car has been seized and will now undergo mechanical testing.

“We’ve had a fairly serious motor vehicle incident just off Johnston on Granville Island. Due to the severity of the situation, we’ve got multiple resources here, including several of our rescues, several ambulances, and a large VPD presence to control traffic,” says Captain Jonathan Gormick with Vancouver Fire Rescue.

Roxanne Cave was in the office nearby and heard the accident.

“It was a sound, it was hard to really imagine,” she explained. “My first thought was that it was our glass jewelry cabinet had fallen, someone had run into it.”

“It looks like the SUV somehow backed, at a very high speed,” says Cave.

“And of course everyone just runs to make sure everyone’s okay. It’s pretty shocking to think of that happening here on Granville Island where everyone is enjoying themselves, there’s so many tourists out here, people who come down here to enjoy themselves.”

“We went crossing the street, and we saw the car into the store. We thought it was just an accident, but we saw that there were some people here with blood and there were a lot of people crying, like very nervous. There was a girl under the car,” shares another witness, Pablo.

Cave says it’s difficult to think what happened, since traffic there is usually “crawling”.
