George Massey Tunnel traffic improving: Langley councillor

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) — Here’s a shock if you think Metro Vancouver traffic is becoming more congested — the George Massey Tunnel may be improving.

Langley councillor Nathan Pachal says data from a provincial environmental assessment shows traffic volume has gone down by nearly a per cent over the past decade.

“Basically you notice a slight increase in the Alex Fraser traffic but you notice a decrease in the Massey Tunnel.”

Pachel says the data is an argument against a nearly $4 billion replacement bridge for the four-lane divided highway between Richmond and Delta.

“Imagine what the $4 billion could do for much needed transit, which is something our region has called for, at the same time, Metro Vancouver has come out against the George Massey Tunnel replacement.”

Pachal says road pricing and tolling should be added to crossings like the tunnel and then an evaluation of whether spending is needed on a new bridge.

Pachal says road pricing could bring the tunnel traffic down to levels seen in the 80’s.
