PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A ten-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after getting attacked by a black bear in Port Coquitlam Saturday afternoon.
Conservation officers received the call about the attack at around 5:30 p.m.
The bear had been out with its cub.
Conservation inspector Murray Smith explains what happened when they found the mother bear.
“The sow black bear wouldn’t leave the location with a large human presence, so it was destroyed,” he notes.
The attack happened on a trail in the River Springs neighbourhood of Port Coquitlam, between David and Lincoln Avenues.
Smith says they will now try to figure out why the bear had ventured down into the city with her cub.
“We are trying to determine the conflict history of the sow and cub. We want to determine if they were attracted by garbage. Were they around humans before and did they simply lose their fear of humans?”
BC Ambulance say the little girl was critically injured.
