Surfing centre idea floated for False Creek

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Pipe dream or serious proposal?

CitySurf Vancouver would be a Canadian first and the second surf park in North America.

 

 

Reviver, the local sport experience design firm behind the plan says it’s looking to reconnect people to an “underutilized” part of a False Creek.

CitySurf would include a pay-for-use surf park complete with six foot waves, a beach at Creekside Park, along with restaurants and entertainment facilities topped with a green roof.

On the company website designer Colin Weston says “we saw an opportunity with CitySurf to program public open space uses with social activities to deliver a city asset that otherwise would never happen if it was reliant on public funding for design, construction and operation.”

To take care of the pollution issue, dirty False Creek water be filtered through a porous membrane system inside a massive floating wave pool.

You’d pay to ride the man-made six foot waves but the beach would be free.

Reviver says it has engaged with the Vancouver Park Board which is looking for input about creating more swimming areas in the city.

Surf parks have recently opened in the UK and US with proposals in the workd for Australia and Europe.

CitySurf is also touting itself “as a future Canadian athlete training resource” with surfing coming to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
