Canadians in action on Day 14 of the Games

By

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (NEWS 1130) –  Canada racked up four medals in total as Erica Wiebe won gold in 75kg freestyle wrestling, Andre De Grasse took home the silver in the 200m race, Damian Warner pulled in a bronze in the decathlon, and Meaghan Benfeito earned a second bronze medal in diving at Rio 2016.

Here are some notable events and Canadians to closely monitor.

Women’s Soccer
The Canadian women’s soccer team will try to win its second consecutive Olympic medal as they take on Brazil in the bronze medal game. Canada went undefeated during group play before falling to Germany in the semifinal. The two sides have never met at the Olympics before, but Canada did beat Brazil for the gold medal at the 2011 Pan Am Games.

50km Racewalk
Evan Dunfee of Richmond captured the bronze after a controversial bump during the race that saw a Japanese athlete disqualified.

Women’s Golf
Brooke Henderson hammered out four straight birdies to close her second round of the stroke play tournament to move within two shots of leader. Alena Sharp remains in the event as well. She is tied in 32nd place but is nine shots back of the leader.

4×100 Relay
Both the men’s and women’s relay teams qualified for Friday’s final. The women will kick off their race Friday night at 6:15 p.m. PT. and the Canadian men will run approximately at 6:35 p.m. PT. Andre De Grasse did not participate in yesterday’s race as he was focused on the 200m but is expected to run for Canada today. That will certainly boost their chances, despite Usain Bolt being expected to run for Jamaica in what might be his final Olympic race.

Women’s Pole Vault
Canada’s Kelsie Ahbe finished in eighth place in the qualification round, clearing a lifetime-best 4.55 metres. The final goes today at 4:30 p.m. PT.

Equestrian
A handful of Canadians, including Eric Lamaze, Tiffany Foster, and Yann Candele, will be taking part in the individual jumping competition. Canada came just short of a medal in the team jumping event earlier in the week and the Canadians are hoping to land on the podium this time around.

Taekwondo
Various Taekwondo events will run out throughout the day on Friday. The name to watch is Melissa Pagnotta, who begins her event in the qualification round in contest 7. If she advances, she will have to win a few matches before she is able to move into medal contention. The final will take place later in the day.

Kayak
Mark de Jonge qualified for the final in the kayak single (K1) 200m heats this morning. That final race goes this weekend.

BMX
Tory Nyhaug will drive in heat 2 of the semifinal of men’s BMX. The medal round will take place later today.
