YVR passenger traffic on track for sky high record year

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – YVR is cruising to another record high passenger year, but as all those people passing through the gates, there are still some tried and true methods to sure your airport experience is turbulence-free.

If numbers stay on track, the airport is set to see 21 million people this year, a million more than last year. Customer care director Reg Krake says they expect to board 6.25 million people between June and August.

“We expect up to 85,000 passengers on our busiest days and really these last two weeks of August is our busiest period,” YVR customer care director Reg Krake says, adding that’s well above the 54,500 people that can fit into BC Place.

Friday’s are their busiest days.

All those extra passengers will make for some long lines at check-in and security, Krake says, so he encourages passengers to check in online, use carry-on luggage when they can and arrive 90 minutes ahead of domestic flights and two hours before international flights.

Krake attributes the increase in traffic to their new airline Xiamen Air, as well as new flight destinations for West Jet, Air Canada, and Air Transat.

As traffic continues to grow, Krake says they have a couple projects in the works to expand the airport which will begin in the coming years.
