Surrey guns and gangs cash injection isn’t doing as much as advertised: NDP

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Back in April, the province announced 23 million dollars towards a province-wide guns and gangs strategy.

This was right after Surrey recorded its 32nd shooting of the year.

The government is out with a list of accomplishments and ongoing initiatives, mostly a summary of things we’ve heard before.

“There were six arrests earlier this year which resulted in seemingly a dramatic reduction in the amount of gunplay we’ve seen on our streets,” says Surrey councillor Bruce Hayne, who thinks the money has been doing some good.

NDP Justice Critic Mike Farnworth says the government should have come up with a more comprehensive plan.

“People in Surrey, for example, are still very concerned about the level gun violence, and if you talk to people out there, they’re not seeing improvement.”

Surrey will introduce its own comprehensive strategy later this fall.
