NEWS 1130 Worst Commute winner drives four hours daily

By

The first winner in our Worst Commute contest may put most commutes to shame as this person drives from Whistler to Burnaby.
But Tony Adamson isn’t really complaining.

“I lived in Squamish and my commute was already fairly long, but I am not alone as our little logging town is becoming more of a bedroom community by the day. My wife had lived there since 2013 and we loved it there, so I put down a deposit for a condo that was yet to be built in August 2015 with the anticipation that it would be ready to move in by early October 2016 and with other people in the same development telling us how their unit was completed early so possibly even sooner.”

He explains the region’s housing crunch has made things frustrating.

“Fast forward to the end of July 2016 and the lease for our rental was coming due and we were in one of those awful fixed term leases that seem to make the news on a regular basis these days. Our landlord decided to increase our rent 25 per cent, and with a vacancy rate close to zero in Squamish, we did what any couple would do in our situation, we begged my in-laws to house us for a month or two at their place in Whistler until the condo was finished.”

“Well, that condo is now behind schedule and so I now live with my in-laws and I am stuck with four hours of daily commuting from Whistler until at least December, but no firm date has been established, so who knows. This could get ugly as winter gets into full swing. I am not sure if my commute is the worst, but it has to be in the top 10.”

Tony’s daily pain earns him $500 from our partners at Jim Pattison Volkswagen Surrey.
