Bank account for Surrey school PAC drained

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The Mounties are investigating after $20,000 – $30,000 raised to build a new playground at an inner city Surrey school has gone missing.

NEWS 1130 broke the story after obtaining a letter sent to parents at K.B. Woodward Elementary from the Parent Advisory Council executive which indicated its bank account had been drained.

Doug Strachan with the Surrey School District says parents at the school have been left devastated.

“That’s a lot of hard work, particularly by an inner city school,” says Strachan. “The community came together to build this playground for the children of the school and it’s been pulled out from under them it appears. So there’s a lot of hurt people.”

The RCMP isn’t saying much at this point, only telling NEWS1130 it is investigating what it calls “banking irregularities.”

“A lot of parents, students and staff have worked very hard over a couple of years to collect funds for a playground and I understand they were just about there,” says Strachan. “We’re talking $20,000 or $30,000 or more that seems to be unaccounted for.”

In that letter sent by the PAC Executive, it suggests recovering the funds is “unlikely” and hints at future fundraising plans to get the money needed to build the playground.

The missing money is from the bank account of the PAC for K.B. Woodward Elementary and does not have any connection to the Surrey School District or the school itself.
