Bustling local film industry “absolutely unprecedented”: DGC BC

(VANCOUVER) NEWS 1130 – There is a good chance you have come across more film sets and production crews lately.

Kendrie Upton, executive director with the Directors Guild of Canada BC (DGC BC), says the bustling local film industry is “absolutely unprecedented,” and the busiest she has seen in over 30 years in the industry.

“With 50-some productions going on the board it’s definitely challenging to find people. I think that the key roles of first assistant director, location manager and production manager are certainly ones where [studios] want the best possible person they can get.”

Upton says studios are choosing strategic start times in order to pick up experienced crews.

“Finding people that are coming available at a time that works for you and I think that’s what studios are doing, they’re trying to time their start dates such that they’re able to pick up experienced crews.”

It means, when workers finish with one project, they don’t have to wait long for another job to pop up.

The director’s guild made some considerable changes to entrance requirements earlier this year, in part to make it easier to join the guild.
