Winner of the Worst Commute contest does it all with one car

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The third winner of our Worst Commute contest takes more than 13 hours each day to complete her trip.

Cristina Lawrie takes an adventure from Coquitlam through Burnaby every morning.

My husband works from 7am to 3:30pm & I work from 8am to 4:30pm. We have to wake our 2 children up at 5:30am, and leave by 6am, because we share 1 vehicle. After fighting with the tired kids for a half hour and load them in the car, we travel to North Burnaby to drop my husband off at work for 7am. Next we travel to South Burnaby where the kids get dropped off at daycare for 7:30am, and then I head back to North Burnaby where I work. When my husband gets off work, he takes the bus to meet me at work, and then we head from North Burnaby to South Burnaby (this normally 10 minute drive can sometimes take up to 1 hour sitting in traffic) to pick up the kids. We’re usually there by about 5:30-6pm. After loading the kids in the car, we get to hear them fight with each other the entire ride home. Sometimes if we’re lucky they pass out from exhaustion. By 7pm we walk in the door and then we get to think about dinner and preparing for the next day.

She blames her travel troubles on a familiar foe.

Children should not have to live like this! It’s the housing market that causes this. We cannot afford to live in or near the city we work, just like many other Lower Mainlanders.

Cristina’s commuting chaos earns her $500 from our partners at Jim Pattison Volkswagen Surrey.
