Tenant advocates launch new course for renters

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With lots of stories in the news about demovictions, renovictions and house flipping, renters are understandably jittery.

But renters are about to get some help understanding tenancy laws in BC.

The Tenant Resource Advisory Centre is preparing to launch Part 2 of their online renters’ course.

The lessons  promise to make tenants more savvy about their rights.

Renting it Right currently covers the ins and outs of securing a rental suite.

But next month the centre will be launching a course earmarked for people who are already tenants.

“It’ll cover topics such repairs, deposits, rent increases, how to access the Residential Tenancy Branch’s dispute resolution service,” explains TRAC’s Andrew Sakamoto.

Renters account for more than one-third of households in Metro Vancouver and half of households in Vancouver, which is why Sakamoto says everyone should be familiar with renting rules.

“Renting it Right is something we’d love to get into the school system. Residential tenancy law in general I think needs to be more mainstream, as the rental market continues to be more challenging for tenants.”

The course includes videos, exercises and a final exam. A certificate of completion, which is recognized by Landlords BC, is issued if the course is passed.
