HARRISON HOT SPRINGS (NEWS 1130) – The latest winner in our Worst Commute contest may have you feeling relieved you only have to go from point A to point B.
William Suelzle works for a concrete company and lives on Hemlock Mountain near Harrison Hot Springs. He explains what he goes through every morning.
My day can start with a 5 a.m. wake-up call from my company asking me how fast I can get to North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, Granville Island and Mitchell Island — hopefully Langley or closer. I am given one and a half hours to get to work from the call. Anywhere past Langley and I am guaranteed late.
I leave in the dark and come home in the dark after working a 12 to 14-hour shift. My Little KIA Rio has been clipped by a snow plow passing me, hit a basketball size boulder that has rolled off the mountain on a crazy rainy morning setting off my airbags. I still drove to work airbags flapping and all.
I travel eight kilometres of gravel potholed road then five kilometres of windy mountain road just to get to the bottom of the hill. My commute averages two and a half hours each way but has taken up to six hours. This is every day up and down the mountain. I love the tranquility of where I live but it’s quite a commute.
William’s commuting pain earns him $500 from our partners at Jim Pattison Volkswagen Surrey.
