Pipeline protest planned in Vancouver this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You may want to think twice before driving into Downtown Vancouver on Saturday afternoon. There’s a planned protest that could tie up one of the bridges across False Creek.

Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May will lead the march against Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline beginning at 12 p.m. at Vancouver City Hall.

It will then head across the Cambie Street Bridge, before wrapping up at Library Square downtown. With construction on the Burrard corridor continuing, it could temporarily leave the Granville Bridge as the only full-functional crossing in and out of downtown. May has been a vocal opponent of the project since its inception.

However, that’s not the case with Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi who was in town this week. Nenshi says the project’s future should be determined by what is best for Canada, and not by regional political concerns.

He also disagrees with Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson over his stance that West Coast communities should have veto power over the project.

The proposed $6.8 billion expansion would twin the existing pipeline and increase the system’s capacity from 300,000 barrels a day to 890,000.
