What Canadians are buying on Black Friday

By

TORONTO, ON. (NEWS 1130) – It’s the day anyone looking to grab a new TV or some other hot deal has been waiting for — Black Friday is underway.

There are a number of peak buying windows, which began just after midnight, lasting up until 2 a.m. and there is typically another surge between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., followed by lunch.

“We have seen the 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. lunch-hour shopping as one of those peaks. The hypothesis for why that is, is consumers are taking the time to not only buy online but they are also visiting stores,” says Google’s Head of Industry, Retail Mohit Grover.

And more people will use a smart phone in that shopping spree says Grover. “We’ve started to see smart phones work as a personal research assistant both inside and outside of a store. Retailers are viewing these smart phones as a friend not a foe.”

That’s because many people will do some pre-buying research on their phone before heading in to a store “Having a strong presence on mobile could help answer questions for consumers, and move consumers along the path towards purchasing an item,” adds Grover.

Surprisingly, what people are looking for today will differ greatly from Cyber Monday. “There are a few categories that peak [during shopping today]. Apparel, toys and games and consumer electronics were the highest shopping-related searches on Black Friday,” says Grover.

He adds on Cyber Monday most people will go after consumer electronics and home appliances.
