Major move: West End heritage home to be relocated today

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Get ready for a spectacular and somewhat strange sight in the West End and False Creek over the next day.

Nickel Brothers Moving is very slowly and carefully relocating an 111-year-old home.

“I thought it was a crazy idea, but not impossible.”

The Edwardian-era home on Pendrell was saved at the last minute thanks in part to the help of James Tod, with JTA Development Consultants.

“We made a few phone calls, West Bank was game. We made a few more phone calls to the city to see if the idea was workable given the time frame as West Bank had most of the permitting in place to go ahead with pre construciton on that site and three weeks later here we are,” says Tod.

He’s hoping this inspires other developers to go the retention route.

“We haven’t asked for additional density nor additional bonuses or anything above and beyond what is allowed under just regular permitting and zoning. This is a feasible method of saving vulnerable character buildings.”

Once moved to its new home in Mount Pleasant, the home will be renovated and used as a rental property.
