TransLink’s plan for the snow, slush and ice

By

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – The transit authority claims it was prepared for today’s snowfall, but admits it was caught off guard by just how much snow has fallen.

Anne Drennan with TransLink says crews up at SFU’s main Burnaby campus are out with plows to clear the roads, however, the university cancelled classes early this morning until the roads have cleared.

“We have sent one bus to the top [of the mountain] that made it, despite it being rather treacherous in spots. Because of that we are running a shuttle, so the 144 bus will now run from Duthie and Hastings Streets, but as a shuttle. It will be slow progress because we only have a couple of shuttles that are able to run, but no articulated buses can head up the mountain at this time.”

Soon after the snow started falling, NEWS 1130 started getting reports of buses either getting stuck or not being able to make it up certain roads because of the slick conditions.

Drennan warns if you are taking transit today, you have to give yourself plenty of extra time. “There will be some delays across the system with buses. We’ve been de-icing the wires since the cold weather set in.”

She adds crews have also been and will continue salting the roads and paths at bus loops.

There are delays on nearly every SkyTrain Line, including the new Evergreen Line, due to accumulated snow on the tracks.
