Province outlines plan to prevent further ice bombs

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is outlining plans to make the Alex Fraser and Port Mann bridges safer for Thursday when more snow is expected to hit.

De-icing frequency is going to increase on the Alex Fraser, on the cross beams where it’s believed ice built up before falling on cars yesterday.

Crews will also begin that work sooner in the day before ice builds up.

As for the Port Mann, TI Corp will increase monitoring and use its collaring system to clear the cables more frequently.

In terms of compensation for those who had their cars damaged by the chunks of falling ice, the province will pay your ICBC deductible and your toll for that crossing.

This follows 40 such incidents of ice bombs on those two bridges, with most of those involving damaged windshields.

Meantime NDP Transportation Critic Claire Trevena says the province should find a way to fix this.

“This is what we hear all the time from the government. It’s their responsibility to make sure that our highways are safe, that our roads are safe, that our bridges are safe. I think that there’s a responsibility there isn’t being acted upon.”

She says the problems show the BC government should focus on fixing the existing bridges before going ahead with a new one to replace the Massey Tunnel.

Environment Canada has just issued a special weather statement warning we could see a significant snowfall, and with a cool trend in place — the snow may stay on the ground for several days.
